Britomart station changes

News story
Friday 23 Dec 2016

The Chief Post Office (CPO) building closed and new entrances have been created for Britomart station. The building will be closed for the next three years for strengthening works as part of the City Rail Link tunnelling.

Alongside the Commercial Bay works, this area will be a busier construction site starting 2017. However, pedestrian access on Lower Queen Plaza from Quay Street to Customs Street will be maintained and footpaths in front of McDonald’s/R.M. Williams and Hollywood Bakery & Espresso/Downtown Kebab will remain open.

To catch a train, you will need to use the new entrances on Commerce, Tyler, Galway streets and Takutai Square (eastern entrance).

Here’s what you need to know:

  • All trains will run as usual.
  • You’ll find ticket and top up machines, the ticket office and customer service centre in the new entrance.
  • There will be new toilets in the new Commerce Street entrance and the current toilets will close.
  • There will be stair, lift and some escalator access from the Commerce Street entrance. Takutai Square will still have escalator access.

The Chief Post Office is a heritage building and its heritage values will be maintained during construction. Those involved in the construction are working closely with Heritage New Zealand.

When completed, the City Rail Link will provide more frequent trains across the network, more direct services to the city centre and will double the number of people who can use trains at peak times. The CRL will also open opportunities for new commercial, residential and retail developments, particularly around the stations.
