City Rail Link – Accessing the City Centre

News story
Tuesday 22 Mar 2016

The City Rail Link (CRL) works are now underway, with early enabling works along Wellesley and Victoria Streets. This major project for the city will deliver long term benefits, improving access into the city centre, accommodating the growing numbers of people working, living and visiting here.

The CRL project is just one of a number of projects underway that are improving the way in which we will access and experience the city centre. These include new cycleways, including the Quay Street cycleway now under construction, a new bus network being rolled out this year, and the potential for Light Rail which is currently under investigation.

What is Auckland Transport doing to ensure that people and goods can access and get around during the works?

· Auckland Transport are encouraging people to consider how they access the city over this time through their Build is On campaign. A reduction in commuter traffic will ensure the roads are freed up for essential business servicing.

· An additional 16,500 week day average seats are being introduced between March and June 16, including the introduction of new double decker bus services on key routes (including North Shore, and Mt Eden); along with new train timetables and bus lanes on Queen Street.

View the Build is on Campaign video here, which includes a number of tips and ideas on how to access the city.

What is Heart of the City doing to promote the city centre over this time?

Our Destination Marketing and Events strategy focuses on the diversity of experiences available in the city centre. Our focus is on new news, events and festivals, dining and nightlife, fashion, arts and culture. We will continue to tell the important story that the city is open for business and there is always something to do, see or visit. It’s an ‘always on’ strategy to inspire people to visit.

Campaigns across the year, such as Winter, Restaurant Month, Fashion, Art Week and Christmas work to put the city centre top of mind. Sponsoring city centre events also gives people reasons to visit and help to create a vibrant city centre.

We talk to more than 250,000 people every week across our various channels. To keep connected with us, sign up to receive our regular consumer newsletter here, or like us on Facebook.
