City Streets Transformation Continues

News story
Wednesday 5 Feb 2014

The transformation of our streets in the inner city continues with construction well underway in Federal Street, Upper Khartoum Place and O’Connell Street. These projects form part of the programme of works that falls under the Auckland’s City Centre Master Plan 2012 and the 10-year CBD upgrade programme that started in 2004. In a relatively short period of time we have seen dramatic changes to the city streetscapes, and significant benefits to the surrounding businesses. Here’s a quick reminder of some of those changes.

Fort Street 2009                                                                                             Fort Street 2013

Darby Street 2009                                                                                           Darby Street 2013

O’Connell Street will be turned into a shared space and will have a similar look, feel, and function to the recently completed streets such as Fort Street, Jean Batten Place and Elliott Street. Funded by the CBD Targeted Rate, it is expected to be completed in August 2014. Auckland Transport have been engaging with the affected businesses in the area, and we will be working closely with them to ensure that disruption to business is mitigated as much as possible.

Upper Khartoum Place plans will see an additional set of stairs linking the lower and upper spaces and will complement the lower square’s upgrade. The work is expected to be completed around August 2014.
