Feedback wanted by 4 September, on the Draft Trading and Events in Public Places Bylaw

The proposed Trading and Events in Public Places Bylaw is now open for comment, with feedback due by Thursday 4 September. Trading and events in public places contributes to the economic, social and cultural vitality of Auckland, adds to the character of a local area, provides a useful service to residents and generates income from visitors.

The proposed bylaws covers markets and stalls, mobile shops, outdoor dining, offering commercial services, outdoor display of goods, distribution of promotional material/goods, fundraising, street performances, filming, and events.

We are generally in support of what is proposed, particularly as it looks to incorporate much of what the previous Auckland City Council bylaw stipulated. The two key principles that we will be basing our submission on is that:

• any planned activity in public space does not impact or compromise on fixed business activity (i.e. mobile trading ‘competing’ with fixed business)
• any planned activity does not impact on the enjoyment, accessibility and flexibility of the public space
