Celebrating Matariki Taimoana on the city centre waterfront

Matariki Taimoana celebrates the Māori New Year with events and activations taking place along the city centre waterfront of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Heart of the City is a proud presenting partner of this programme, in collaboration with Auckland Council, Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei, Britomart, Commercial Bay, Silo Park and Viaduct Harbour.

From Quay Park along the waterfront through to Silo Park , over 20 special activities are taking place from June 19 to July 11 - from weaving workshops to large-scale art displays, open-air music, food events and retail spaces reimagined - there's something for everyone.

Taking place mid-winter every year, Matariki signals and begins with the rising of the star cluster of the same name. With Matariki Taimoana, we’re encouraging Aucklanders to be part of this unique and important Māori and New Zealand cultural celebration – where we welcome in Māori New Year, here in the Heart of Auckland City.
