A single council for Auckland provides a real opportunity to build a better city and realise the potential of this remarkable place. Given the right leadership, Auckland Council has the potential to make a real difference for all the citizens of this region, lifting our performance economically, socially and environmentally.

Auckland Council will make it easier to make long-term decisions for the good of the whole region, including developing the infrastructure that Auckland needs if we are to ensure more opportunities for everyone.

A single city will provide a sense of identity that we can all be proud of, without compromising those characteristics that make each part of this region unique. A successful city will be built on reinforcing the places that make us special, ensuring that they are valued and protected.

There are challenges in moving the city forward. The current economic situation strongly reinforces the need for value for money and efficient services across the region. Value for money for ratepayers is something that people in every part of the new city can relate to, and affordable progress must underpin everything the new council does.

A single council committed to affordable progress and built on valuing our diverse communities will be central to a truly world-class, international city. Across the region, Auckland already has much to be proud of, and we must build on the world-class range of events, shows, festivals, and sporting fixtures that already exist to grow our prosperity and attractiveness, for residents and visitors alike.

Protecting our architectural and natural heritage and creating new public spaces like a waterfront that all citizens can access and enjoy, will be the building blocks for the Auckland of the future. My vision is of a place where our growing population has a sense of purpose, direction and hope, and where we can all proudly call Auckland "home".
