Fort Street Road Closures

News story
Monday 18 Jan 2010
To assist us with the design and construction of the Fort Street area upgrade, we wish to advise that Dominion Constructors will be undertaking site investigations between 16 January and 2 February 2010.
The works include the excavation of a number of inspection pits and trenches, and data collection by our specialist survey teams. The location of the test pits and trenches will be located throughout the Fort Street project area, including Fort Street, Commerce Street and Gore Street (between Customs Street and Fort Street) and Fort Lane.
Work hours will generally be, Monday to Sunday, 7.00am to 10.30pm. We will reduce the level of noisy works outside food premises from noon to 2pm.
A plan outlining the location of the works and the expected programme for each area is enclosed with this letter. Works will begin on Saturday 16 January, at all sites, with saw cutting. It will then finish with all sites on 2 February, with sealing and line marking. Please note that the programme could be subject to change.
General site and traffic management
To enable us to complete these works in the most efficient and safest manner, whilst maintaining vehicle and pedestrian access as best possible, the following general traffic management will be in place during the works (except in Fort Lane):
  • Vehicle access through the area, and into private buildings, including off street carparks, will be maintained at all times.
  • On-street parking will be unavailable in the immediate areas of the work.
  • Where loading zones are affected and are there are no nearby loading zones, the contractors will make accommodation for on-street delivery requirements, where possible.
  • Disability parking in Fort Street will be retained at all times.
  • Directional signage and barriers will be in place throughout the project area.
Fort Lane works, Wednesday 20 & Thursday 21 January, Monday 25 to Wednesday 27 January
General through traffic: Given the narrow nature of Fort Lane, general through-traffic will be restricted during the scheduled works on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 January, and Monday 25 to 27 January. It will operate as a two-way flow to allow vehicles requiring access into the private carpark buildings off the lane whilst some areas of the lane are blocked, with access and exit from either Customs Street or Fort Street. Given the narrowness of the lane, vehicles may have to reverse to exit. Traffic management teams will be in place to provide assistance during these works.
It is recommended, that non destination traffic avoid Fort Lane at this time, and recommend that deliveries try to utilise loading zones outside of the lane when possible.
Pedestrian access through Fort Lane will be maintained at all times, allowing businesses throughout the lane to continue to operate.
Fort Lane businesses and property owners have received more detailed information about operations in Fort Lane throughout the works. If you wish to receive this information please let us know.
Fort Street East
Fort Street will continue to operate as entry only from Customs Street. A “no entry, carpark building access only” sign will be placed towards the end of Fort Street east (as indicated on the plan) preventing traffic from using this space to turn around within the area of works, yet retaining two way traffic access for those requiring access to off street car parking in the Fort Street east area.
We will do our best to minimise disruption throughout the duration of the works and appreciate your understanding and cooperation. We will also visit businesses within the area, in advance of the works, to provide more detailed information and answer any questions about the upcoming works.
During the works if there are any immediate issues that need resolution, Dominion's on site project manager, Richard Joseph will be available to provide assistance. Richard can be contacted via the Auckland City Council call centre on (09) 379 2020.
