A new trial to help trades and services access city businesses

News story
Friday 20 Apr 2018

Auckland Transport is piloting a new scheme that will offer trades and service people and the city businesses they work with more certainty about access.

Trades and service vehicles are now able to access allocated spaces in Victoria Street car park – preventing uncertainty and wasted time on finding a park and at a lower rate compared to on-street parking.

Options like this can lower the cost of business and help with efficiency.
Scott Ebbett, Auckland Transport

The three parking spaces, which allow room for unloading gear, can be accessed on the Kitchener Street level and are positioned near the pedestrian entrance and lifts.

This new option is just one of the innovations Auckland Transport is trialling in response to recent consultation carried out with the support of Heart of the City. The survey told us that service businesses such as plumbers and electricians want better choice around parking along with options that prevent them having to search for parking spaces.

In recent years, population and job growth along with construction have created challenges with congestion and access for loading and servicing. AT’s Scott Ebbett tells us they are looking at more efficient, customer focused solutions to help service and delivery businesses access their inner city clients in a way that limits congestion and demand for on-street parking.

AT is increasing the supply of loading zones in key areas of city centre and is developing a ‘live parking availability’ function on the AT Park app allowing people to search for parking spaces nearby, with a trial expected later in the year.

In recent weeks we've already seen the launch of On a Mission, a new delivery service responding to access challenges by trying to reduce the need for delivery vans in the city centre.

Let your service providers know about the Victoria Street service parking trial

  • Price: $4 per hour
  • For: Plumbers, builders or any trade service provider
  • How: Simply drive in as normal to the Kitchener Street entrance, the parks are located in the first bank of parking spaces on the right after you enter. No registration required. Proper use of the parks by trade and service vehicles is monitored by sensors and staff.
  • Timing: The trial will run until October

Give feedback

Auckland Transport would like feedback from businesses to find out ways to improve the service before rolling out to car parks in the wider city centre.
