Queen's Wharf Update

News story
Tuesday 27 Oct 2009
A winning design for Queens Wharf is now only a month away as the design competition nears its completion. Late last month saw the announcement of five individual designs and three team entries, which has created the competition's eight finalists. The final eight refined and detailed designs will be available from 26 October for public viewing at the Union Fish Company Building, 116 Quay Street, or online at www.queenswharf.org.nz. The winning design will be announced mid-November.
The evaluation process and public input, identified several factors critical to the success of the development. These will need to be addressed by the finalists and include how to:
  • best reveal our history, geography and cultures
  • cater for cruise ship industry needs, including access for vehicles and pedestrians
  • recognise that the wharf will be approached from both the sea and land
  • provide opportunities to view or experience the area below, as well as above, the wharf
  • provide adequate shelter for public events including Rugby World Cup 2011
  • be an inviting public space.
The winner will be decided by ministers Murray McCully and Gerry Brownlee, Auckland Regional Council chairman Mike Lee and Mayor of Auckland city, Hon. John Banks, on the recommendation of the chief executives of the Ministry of Economic Development, and the Auckland regional and city councils. The chief executives are assisted by expert advice from an advisory panel comprising Prof. John Hunt, Ian Athfield, Rebecca Skidmore, Jillian de Beer and Graeme McIndoe.
