Sky Tower goes rainbow for the environment

News story
Wednesday 3 Jun 2009
SKYCITY is proud to announce a leap forward in environmental lighting to illuminate Auckland's iconic Sky Tower after the successful test of a new lighting system last night. Following the successful trial, from sundown tonight, Aucklanders in view of the Tower will see a light show featuring all of the colours of the rainbow deep into the night.
The new initiative uses LED lights in place of metal halide flood lights which have been used since the tower was built in 1997 and power saved will equate to over 66% of the energy used by the old lights. As well as power saving, the LED lights offer an infinite number of colour choices which will illuminate even brighter. A new level of automation and flexibility means the system can be controlled from a laptop.
SKYCITY lights the tower is support of worthy causes such as pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month as part of the global illumination campaign or to recognise events such as the recent Comedy Festival. The tower was lit red for Chinese New Year and blue for Blue September to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The tower will be lit blue and red from 24 June – 24 July to celebrate Matariki.
