A new cycleway for the Viaduct

News story
Monday 22 Feb 2021

The updated construction start date for the Viaduct's Project WAVE, a trial connecting the cycling route from Nelson Street to Quay Street, is 14 April.

Additional loading zones, pedestrian crossing points, and a one-way system also form part of the trial, which encompasses Market Place, part of Customs Street West, and Lower Hobson Street.

The cycleway will open in stages and is expected to be fully open by mid-May 2021. In mid-2021, AT will decide its long-term future.

As part of the working group we've been involved to help ensure a positive outcome for the area, and that these changes support business needs. Features of the design include more loading and rideshare areas to service the busy Viaduct precinct. Feedback from businesses and users will be key to evaluating what's working and what's not as a result of the changes.

Project WAVE is an Innovating Streets project, one of a series of trials in a number of local areas to improve connections and create more attractive urban places.
