10 Days of Fashion in the City

News story
Thursday 12 Feb 2015

Update your wardrobe with over 100 in-store offers, experience fabulous fashion events, find out behind the scenes fashion tips, WIN fashionable giveaways and more and celebrate all things fashion in the city over ten very stylish days as fashion fever returns to the heart of Auckland city from 27 February - 8 March with 10 Days of Fashion in the City.

The ten days start with a flourish on Friday 27 February with a special edition of Silo Park’s markets and cinema featuring the most stylish film of recent years, The Great Gatsby. Also on the 27th, the Volvo O’Connell Street Long Lunch will be taking place between 12pm - 4pm. This will be a ticketed long lunch event showcasing many of the district’s businesses - with food by O’Connell Street Bistro, Hotel DeBrett’s Kitchen, Wine Chambers and Touquet and fashion shows by Barkers and Hudson. Britomart is also set for a buzzing evening of sartorial celebration with the opening night of the Designer Garage Sale and Spark Lab’s exclusive t-shirt workshop with the design team from Huffer.

Fashion exhibitions are certainly on trend this season, with three very different collections on show during the event. The New Zealand Fashion Museum looks at the individual style of the country’s south with their show ‘Darker Eden: Fashion from Dunedin’, Gus Fisher Gallery shows works by arty and ethereal local designer Rose Thomas in ‘Out of the Snake Pit and onto the catwalk’ and Auckland Museum presents the international debut of the ‘WOW® World of Wearable Art™’ exhibition, plus a special panel discussion about the obsession with shoes.

Fashion films are also in vogue – the Auckland Art Gallery is running free screenings of two New York-set films documenting different eras of style, ‘Bill Cunningham’s New York’ and ‘Diana Vreeland: The Eye has to Travel’, and for those looking for something a little deeper, Lisa Reihana’s video work ‘Tai Whetuki/House of Death’, part of the Auckland Arts Festival, features the intricately and beautifully hand-crafted costumes used in Pacific mourning rituals.

There’s an opportunity for Auckland style-spotters to share their fashion inspirations and win, too. The #coloursofakl photo contest will run on the Heart of the City Facebook page from Tuesday 10 February, with great weekly prizes to be won.
