A fresh new look for the Aotea Centre
One of the city centre's major cultural venues, Aotea Centre, is undergoing a transformation to rejuvenate the 28-year-old building.
The transformation will be in stages, starting with significant exterior and internal works which will pave the way for developing the Aotea Studios, a new space dedicated to creative collaboration.
Works are already underway on the exterior and are due for completion in February next year. The interior refurbishment will take place from this October until March next year, and the centre will be closed over this time.

Features of the external transformation include stainless steel interlocking plates over new stone panels and glass balustrades giving visitors an unimpeded view of the square and city surrounds.

The inside of the centre will feature a floor-to-ceiling glass entryway and purpose-built glass ticketing office, updated lighting, floor and wall treatments in the foyer areas and new bar areas.
The new look Aotea Centre will be ready in time for the 2019 Auckland Arts Festival.

A new space for creative collaboration is also planned, with RFA set to share designs for the Aotea Studios in early 2019. This purpose-built facility will include specialist studios for development and rehearsal as well as public performance spaces, convention spaces, office accommodation for arts companies and retail and food and beverage outlets.
The development will strengthen the area as the arts quarter for the city centre, as described by the vision for the Aotea quarter. The vision sees the area as the civic, arts, and cultural heart for the people of Tāmaki Makaurau – Auckland: a vibrant, resilient and unique place to indulge the senses, express creativity and celebrate our Māori, Pacific and diverse cultures.
