Auckland City to Plunge into Darkness

Heart of Auckland City and CBD business leaders are working together to encourage Auckland businesses and residents to turn off their lights for one hour, to celebrate Auckland City being the official New Zealand host of Earth Hour 2010.
At 8.30pm on Saturday March 27th 2010, Auckland City along with cities and towns in New Zealand and across the world will turn off their lights for one hour. The purpose, to send a powerful global message that together we can take action on climate change.
To celebrate Earth Hour, from 7:30pm Saturday March 27th, Heart of the City along with Britomart, Auckland City Council, MORE FM and WWF will host a free event at Takutai Lawn in Britomart. The free event will have live entertainment and will be a gathering point in Auckland City to view the Sky Tower lighting display and watch Auckland plunge into darkness. RSVP to the event here.
 
Heart of Auckland City, CEO Alex Swney says that by participating in Earth Hour 2010, Auckland City businesses and residents can show their support for this global cause by taking action en masse and reducing the carbon emissions of our city.
“New Zealand will be the first country in the world to turn off their lights for Earth Hour 2010. With all eyes on Auckland City, we have the opportunity to set the benchmark for participation worldwide” says Swney.

The following buildings/businesses have confirmed their support by switching off:

Auckland Museum, Vero Centre, ASB Building, Colenso House, 171 Hobson St, Columbus House, Phillip Fox Tower, National Bank Tower, Sky Tower, ANZ Centre, Microsoft, AXA Centre, AMP, HSBC Queen St, 280 Queen St, Auckland Club Tower, Lumley Tower, 246 Queen St, 21 Pitt St, the Hilton Auckland, The Langham Auckland, Deloitte Centre (BNZ Bank & Deloitte), Quay West Apartments, IAG Queen St, NZI House Fanshawe St, PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Westin Auckland Lighter Quay, Vector Arena, Westfield Downtown, Westpac Head Office Customs St, Northern Steamship Co., The Rydges Auckland, Mercure Hotel and McDonalds Queen St.
