Ultra Fast Broadband cabling

News story
Monday 4 Nov 2013

Installation of fibre optic cable for Ultra Fast Broadband is underway to the CBD from Hobson St east, including Queen St. Although the work will mean disruption to footpaths and roads as the work progresses, contractors will be working to keep businesses well informed on work in their area. The work generally involves hauling new UFB cables installed in existing ducts, with some additional new work in places including manholes, trenching or other excavations. Affected businesses will receive a letter outlining the work required 3 weeks before the expected date, with confirmation of the timing one week before work starts. No cabling work will be carried out from 9-26 December, to allow for Christmas trading and traffic in the CBD.

The roll out of fibre optic cable, replacing traditional copper cable, will provide the next generation of broadband technology, meaning extra speed and reliability with benefits especially for small and medium businesses. Western areas of the CBD have already been completed, and most businesses in the central and eastern part of the CBD can expect to have broadband by mid-.2014.

There is more information about the cable fibre roll out on the website www.chorusufb.co.nz and for detail of the Auckland CBD work please refer to the Interactive Service Availability Tool at www.chorus.co.nz/maps . Businesses are encouraged to contact their ISP for details of pricing and to confirm when a broadband option is activated.
